2013 Regatta
For the second year in a row, a drizzly morning gave way to blue skies and sunshine just in time for the annual Oxbow Lake Regatta. The traditional birch medallions—hand-crafted each year by the Wylie family—were handed out to all participants in the three water events. The growing popularity of stand-up paddling was evident with the first-time entry of a stand-up surfboard among the 14 competitors in the canoe and kayak event. In the hand-paddled surfboard event two teams raced against each other, while 4 teams battled for first in the pedal-boat event. Special recognition for super-sports Tristan and Zach who participated in all three water events. The kids’ events featured a number of relay races—fill the bucket, torch relay, and stick handling. The teens showed great skill in a new game—two teams competing to get the ball into their opponent’s bucket. All participants were awarded candy medallions—designed and assembled at the Fleck cottage. The inhabitants of the Wylie cottage showed a strong performance—taking over the Sinclair Cup from the Gordon cottage by winning the bean-bag toss and also placing first and second overall in the canoe and kayak race. The Mainland and the Peninsula share tug-o-war bragging rights this year, with one side winning in the kids’ division and the other side taking it in the adult division. Once again the Oxbow Lake Cottagers’ Association appreciates the hospitality of the Oxbow Lakeside Community Club for the use of their open space and beachside. Thank you as well from the convenors—Angie and Peter—to all the volunteers who helped to make this annual event a success: Gary, Keith, Garrett, Taylor, Carol, Kim, Lisa, and Dave. And special thanks to Angie and Peter for organizing it ALL!!
